The Pharmacognosy department at Shri. Neminath Jain Bramhacharyashram’s Shriman Sureshdada Jain College of Pharmacy, Chandwad, is dedicated to exploring, studying, and applying natural products in medicine. Our department serves as a vital bridge between traditional herbal knowledge and modern pharmaceutical sciences, fostering an environment where natural product research thrives. Objectives
The goal of the pharmacognosy department is to disseminate information regarding pharmaceuticals, including information about their origins, cultivation, collection, and preparation for the market. The following goals are also taught in relation to their personalities, the therapeutic effects of their active ingredients, chemical tests to determine their prospective drug molecules, applications in different medical systems, replacements, and adulterants.
1. To impart knowledge on basic principles of Herbal Drug Science and Traditional systems of medicine.
2. To enable the students to identify and evaluate the herbal drugs.
3. To enhance students' learning by imparting knowledge of contemporary methods for phytochemical isolation, screening, and utilization
4. To motivate students to use extraction techniques to find active molecules in natural sources, and then to use different analytical techniques to isolate and purify those molecules
5. Structure elucidation of bioactive compounds' structures by instrumental methods
6. Design, Development and standardization of herbal formulations.
Educational excellence
Our department offers a robust curriculum that integrates theoretical knowledge with practical applications. Students have the opportunity to engage in:
- Undergraduate program that covers a wide range of topics including herbal drug identification and evaluation, phytochemistry, and basic requirements for establishing the herbal drug industry, commerce, and regulations for plant-based products in domestic and world markets.
- Hands-on laboratory experiences that allow students to conduct herbal drug identification and evaluation, phytochemical screenings, formulate and standardize various herbal products, and the isolation, estimation, and identification of active compounds.
- Research projects that provide real-world experience and foster critical thinking and innovation.

Infrastructure and facilities
Our college's pharmacy department is fully equipped with all the latest instruments for effective teaching and the herbal specimens necessary to support the students' curricula. Additionally, we have a medicinal plant garden that is enhanced by a range of therapeutic herbs.
- The Pharmacognosy lab offers morphological and microscopical examinations of cells and tissues of various plant parts, such as roots, stems, leaves, flowers, fruits, and seeds by using the most up-to-date equipment available for effective education.
- It also provides esteemed guidelines to the students regarding phytochemical tests, separation and analysis of active constituents through various techniques.
- It also provides the microtome and microscopes such as Motic microscope and compound microscope to evaluate the herbal drugs.
