M. Pharm. (Pharmacology)

Pharmacology is the science of drugs and their effects on living systems. It lies at the heart of biomedical science, linking together chemistry, physiology and pathology.  Pharmacologists work closely with a wide variety of other disciplines that make up modern biomedical science, including neuroscience, molecular and cell biology, immunology and cancer biology. Pharmacological knowledge improves the lives of millions of people across the world. It maximises their benefit and minimises risk and harm.

Pharmacology is crucial for discovering new medicines to help fight diseases, improving the effectiveness of medicines, reducing unwanted side effects of medicines and understanding why individuals differ in the way they respond to certain drugs, and why some others get addicted.

M. Pharmacy in Pharmacology is a two year post graduate pharmacy course incepted in the year 2010 with the intake capacity of 18 students. The department is affiliated to Savitribai Phule Pune University, Pune. It has a CPCSEA approved (647/PO/Re/S/02/CPCSEA) and well maintained animal house. The course objectives include imparting knowledge and scientific information regarding pharmacology of drugs, to provide practical aspects of pharmacological screening for various medicinal agents using in vivo and in vitro methods along with toxicity studies as per various regulatory guidelines.

The department has equipped with state of art facilities required for screening of drugs such as Randall Sellitto analgesiometer, Plethysmometer, double unit organ bath with digital rotating drum, Physiograph, Von fray filaments, biochemical analyzer, high speed cooling centrifuge and high speed tissue homogenizer etc. The core area of the department includes screening for pain and inflammation, diabetes and its complications, obesity, hyperlipidemia and toxicity studies. The department also caters knowledge about clinical research, its regulations and requirements of modern day drug market.
