D Pharm

D.Pharmacy Introduction

  • Diploma in Pharmacy course is approved by Pharmacy Council of India (PCI).  It is commonly refered as D.Pharm.
  • PCI has considered this course in 3 parts. The course is of 2 years at college and 3 months at training. Part-I is first year and Part-II is second year of the course.The Part-III is Practical Training of 500 hours, spread over minimum 3 months. This training is carried out at any approved, authorised retail medical shop or at any government hospital, under supervision of registered Pharmacist.
  • The student can undergo training immediately after completing their second year annual examination; even though result is awaited.
  • The passing certificate of course is issued only after successful completion of all the three parts of the course.
  • Any candidate is eligible to apply for the course. If he/ she has passed HSC (science) or equivalent examination,  with english, Physics, Chemistry and at least one of biology or mathematics  as subjects (PCB/ PCM). For considering priority in merit list in centralised admission process (CAP) marks of PCB or PCM (whichever is more) are considered.
  • Part I contains 5 theory subjects and 5 practical subjects each of 100 marks. Part II contains 6 theory subjects and 5 practical subjects each of 100 marks.Some field visits and assignments are also there in both the years. The course is of annual pattern. It has 2 terms in each year - First and Second.
  • There are minimum 3 sessional examinations conducted by institution for each year. Out of these 3 sessional examinations average of  best 2 sessional examination marks  are considered for 20 marks  out of 100 marks in each theory and practical subject. Annual examination is conducted by Maharashtra State board of Technical Education ( MSBTE), Mumbai for remaining 80 marks in each theory and practical subject. Sessional examination is for both theory and practical subjects separately. The minimum total passing marks required are 40/100 in each theory and practical subject head separately.
  • The candidate is allowed to keep terms (ATKT) for maximum of 2 subjects (theory or practical or both together) in first year D.Pharm.
  • After successful completion of D.Pharm an Exit examination paper is to be passed by candidate  with 50 % score. The paper is objective and based on some subjects in D.Pharm course.
  • As per new Education Regulation 2020 published by Pharmacy Council of India qualifying the exit exaination is also mandatory for registration with state Pharmacy council. However,there is no limit for number of attempts for qualifying the exit examination. For practicing as a  community pharmacist,  registration with state pharmacy council is a  must.

Scope and career For D.Pharm

The broad categories of jobs, following completion of this course, can either be in the Private sector, the Government sector or Entrepreneurial.

Job Opportunities After completing D Pharmcy in Private Sector:

  • Chemist/ Community Pharmacist / Retail Medical shop –Minimum qualification for  getting license to start Retail Medical shop, as an entreprenuer, is D.Pharm (Registered with state council required.)
  • Wholesale drug stores or medical distributors or Medical Agency- After D. Pharm, as an entreprenuer one can start wholesale medical distributor business by taking License from FDA.
  • Medical representative- You can be employed by Pharma industry to market Medicinesbulk drug and formulations,surgicals etc.Based on your skill may get promoted to marketing managerial posts.
  • Community Pharmacist- May start your own retail or wholesale  business of medicines, cosmetics and surgicals of allopathic, homeopathic, Ayurvedic and unani medicines for human being or animals and birds (veterniary)  Or can get employment in these establishment
  • Repacking of bulk Drugs-  D. Pharm can get license for  repacking of bulk drugs.
  • Manufacture of Cosmetics- D. Pharm can undertake manufacture of cosmetics.
  • Work As an Packaging and Stores supervisor in Pharma and food  Industry.
  • .Quality control Analyst – One can work as an analytical or quality control pharmacist,  in the testing phase of the production process; to ensure that the medicinal products meet the stringent quality control standards.
  • Medical Transcriptionist – As a medical transcriptionist sometimes referred to as healthcare documentation specialists, you will be required to listen to voice recordings that physicians and other healthcare workers make and convert them into written reports. The candidate will have to review and edit medical documents created using speech recognition technology. Transcriptionists are useful while interpreting medical terminology and abbreviations while preparing patients’ medical histories, discharge summaries, and other documents.
  • Production technician/ assistant - to assist in the formulation of drugs or medicines to the approved Pharmacists.
  • Hospital Pharmacist - As an custodian and dispenser of medicine in private and public sector hospitals.
  • In public sector/ Government jobs -as an Pharmacist or senior pharmacist or chief pharmacist in Primary health center (PHC), Rural Hospital, Sub district hospital,District civil Hospital, Military hospital, Railway hospital, ESIC hospital, Public corporation owned hospitals.
  • Clinical Pharmacist - AS an assistant or technician to assist clinical evaluation trials of new drug or old drug for new purpose. You may collect and process data for such clinical studies.
  • Technical Supervisor- As a technical supervisor you will oversee the work of a team of Pharmacy Technicians that offer assistance to Pharmacists with the dispensing of medical prescriptions. You will be required to monitor daily activities and manage work schedules effectively to ensure that quality, production and customer service standards are maintained.
  • Scientific Officer – As a scientific officer you will be expected to operate and manage scientific equipment and/or scientific processes that support others' research or teaching. You shall be responsible for the use and management of laboratory space. You may be required to help with the preparation and delivery of lectures / Labs / Seminars or field work.
  • Medical Representatives- You will be required to engage in this marketing activity through field work. This is a very crucial and vital role because medical representatives are the key point of contact between pharmaceutical and medical companies, the health care professionals, and clients. You should be in possession of excellent product knowledge, be adept at answering queries, providing advice and introducing new products. Exceptional sales skills are very vital for medical representatives.
  • Medical Coding: After a small professional training one can work as medical coder. 

Entrepreneurial Career Options:

Depending on the candidate’s aptitude, inclination, financial position,decision making ability, and business risk taking abilities, they can start their own business and run their own store. They can start their own wholesale medicines business, surgical items shop, own retail pharmacy outlet, own chemist shop or private drug store. They can start selling medicines based on doctors’ prescriptions.They can also take franchisee of some well known  retail chain Pharmacy stores. They can undertake to run Hospital Pharmacy individually or partners.

Community Pharmacist:

Upon completion of this course, a student can opt to become a community pharmacist, where he will be:

  • Working under legal and ethical guidelines
  • procuring and appropriate storage of medicines.
  • Distributing and dispensing medicine
  • Ensuring the safety of the public by supplying safe and correct medicines.
  • Interacting directly with the customers
  • Selling and record keeping of both OTC and prescription based medicines, surgicals, healthcare devices, health equipments , hospital supplies, surgicals etc.
  • Can undertake Government hospital supplies, Janaushadi stores, Generic medical stores.
  • Informing the patients about the dosage and proper use of the medicines.
  • Provide safety instructions, warnings and precautions about medicines,their interactions,allergy etc..
